Oulu Sinfonia invites you on an intense journey into Sergei Prokofiev’s life and works during a festival comprising three concerts. As part of the festival, we are delighted to welcome the audience-charming winner of the XII International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, Inmo Yang, for an eagerly anticipated return to Oulu. Throughout the festival, Yang will perform as the soloist in both of Prokofiev’s violin concertos.
Prokofiev gained fame as a rough-and-tumble enfant terrible but settled down amidst the waves of the Russian Revolution. Key works of his new style, such as the Classical Symphony and the lyrical Violin Concerto No. 1, still carry irony and satire, albeit now with a more measured approach.
The composer returned to the Soviet Union by creating music for the film Lieutenant Kijé. This military farce about the fictional deeds of an officer has largely been forgotten, but Prokofiev’s suite, with its satirical twists, remains a perennial favorite in concerts.
