Ruth Gipps: Song for Orchestra (Finnish Premiere)
Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120
Three timeless classics and a landmark of contemporary music – Simon Crawford-Phillips’s Oulu debut has it all. The immensely popular Hungarian Dances made Johannes Brahms an instant ruler of the light music scene, while the inventive brilliance of Robert Schumann’s Fourth Symphony was recognised only decades later.
The great unsung voice of British Romanticism, Ruth Gipps – a master of richly shaded orchestral colour – has become a familiar name in Oulu Sinfonia’s programmes. Her tone poem Song for Orchestra, brimming with quintessentially English elegance, evokes the serenity of nature with almost Sibelius-like overtones. The Double Concerto for One by Sweden’s grand old man of composition, Daniel Börtz, is a true one-off: written especially for violinist Malin Broman, it calls for the solo mastery of two instruments at once – a challenge Broman famously meets with flair.
