Sir Michael Tippett: Little Music for String Orchestra
Dmitri Šostakovitš: Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor, Op. 35

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90

Chief Conductor Rumon Gamba brings to Oulu once again one of the rarer gems of British music, Sir Michael Tippett’s Little Music. True to its name, it’s a brief yet delightful interlude created by the great composer of the last century between his larger works. At the other end of the spectrum is Johannes Brahms’s third symphony; perhaps the most balanced example of the German symphonic style, it offers a celebration of blended orchestral sound for over half an hour.

Dmitri Shostakovich was able to compose his first piano concerto without the threat of political oppression. From this freedom of imagination came a mischievous, parodic, and at times cabaret-like revelry, with two soloists: the piano is joined by a troublesome trumpet. In Oulu, the concerto will be interpreted by Oulu Sinfonia’s principal trumpet Thomas Petit and Elisabeth Brauß, whose rapid rise to prominence in the piano world has already made her a star.

Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00. Discussion of the forthcoming concert.
