Amy Beach: Symphony in E minor, Op. 32, ”Gaelic”
Aulis Sallinen 90 years! Sallinen’s cantata Barabbas Dialogues tells the story of Judas and the thief Barabbas as they wrestle with their conscience in the shadow of Golgotha. Its predecessor, the Barabbas Variations, is a vigorous concerto for accordion. With its approachable musical language, virtuosic solos, and dramatic backstory, the Barabbas Variations stand out as one of the most fascinating concert pieces in Finnish music.
Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony, composed in 1896, is the first symphony in history written by an American woman. The work invites the listener on a stirring exploration of Celtic history, Irish dreams, and ultimately universal emotions.
Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18:00.
