Peter Maxwell Davies: An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise
It has been said dance always comes with a sprinkling of the kind of madness that would do anybody good. Chief Conductor Rumon Gamba conducts a bevy of dance works with rhythms that flow right to your feet: whereas the minimalist John Adams depicts Chairman Mao breaking into dancing madness in the midst of a state visit, the Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau takes the audience to the pulsing court of an Enlightenment king. Peter Maxwell Davies’s wedding feast culminates with a bagpipe solo.
The Spanish violinist Leticia Moreno finally makes her debut in Oulu, with a pair of two virtuosic works in tow: Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane, a work of romantic traveller music, as well as a string of hits from the best-known scenes of the opera Carmen, arranged into a fantasy by Pablo de Sarasate.
