Gustav Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde
Legend has it that the superstitious Gustav Mahler feared composing his ninth symphony, believing that the ninth would bring certain death to its creator. To cheat fate, he gave his next symphonic work a name instead of a number: Das Lied von der Erde – The Song of the Earth. Blending the worlds of symphony and song cycle, this monumental work carries listeners on a journey through ancient China, where carefree songs of youth and love give way to reflections on eternity. Tenor Tuomas Katajala and mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland shine as the soloists.
In 1891, Antonín Dvořák composed three works exploring the human condition. The middle of these, Carnival, dives into life’s joys, wonders, and whims of fate in a vibrant orchestral celebration.
Oulu-born and internationally acclaimed composer Lara Poe wrote Onerva Songs in 2023, a joint commission by Oulu Sinfonia and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. At the concert on Europe Day, the orchestra will give the world premiere of her new orchestral work, commissioned in collaboration with Naantali Music Festival and Sinfonia Lahti.

Europe Day concert presents guests from allover Europe.
