Tectonic plates rumble and the bedrock whispers in the concert that is part of the Ostrobothnian Contemporary Music Festival. The American composer Ellen Reid’s new work Earth Between Oceans races across the U.S. coastline. Combining choir, orchestra and field recordings, the piece is driven by the power of the four classical elements, leaving an unavoidable question lingering in the air: how much longer can this continue?
Bryce Dessner, guitarist of The National and composer, has crafted concertos for the world’s greatest soloists. His Trembling Earth, performed in London, Sydney and Berlin, was born for the uniquely poetic expressiveness of cellist Anastasia Kobekina. The lyrical, at times haunting dialogue between cello and orchestra is a touching tribute to Mother Nature’s boundless resilience.
