Musicians worldwide have long sought Kalevi Aho’s concertos for their instruments – more than forty have been composed to date. Tonight, Oulu Sinfonia’s piccolo player Carlotta Petri has the honour of giving the world premiere of a concerto originally created as a bespoke work.

The melancholic pan flute was born when the forest god Pan, driven by desire, pursued the nymph Syrinx to the riverbank. The nymph escaped by transforming into a reed, from which Pan carved the first flute for himself. Danish Romantic Carl Nielsen wove this myth into an enchanting tone poem, where French sensuality meets Scandinavian clarity of form. The evening, conducted by Chief Conductor Rumon Gamba, culminates in Ludwig van Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, a celebration of honour, gentleness and Mother Nature herself.

Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00. Discussion of the forthcoming concert.
