The Beauty of Incomplete

Béla Bartók found a final flourishing shortly before his death. His Viola Concerto, a study in neoclassical simplicity, was left unfinished. Once completed by Bartók’s friends it quickly became a cornerstone of the instrument’s repertoire and one of the landmark works of the century. In Oulu, it will be performed by American star Jennifer Stumm.

Mysticism, spiritual growth, sound and energy converge in the music of Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the last century’s greatest composers. Her Fairytale Poem (1971) is a richly symbolic musical fable, easy to relate to: a frustrated pastel crayon contemplates its untapped talents as the end draws near.

Conductor Vuokko Lahtinen’s graduation concert culminates with Jean Sibelius’s sixth symphony, a refreshing counterpoint to 1920s modernism.
