James MacMillan: Seven Last Words from the Cross (1993)
Cantata for choir & strings
Joseph Haydn: Seven Last Words Of Christ
The Oulu Symphony Orchestra and Risto Joost invite the audience to sit back and enjoy two great compositions. In 1785, the Viennese master Joseph Haydn composed a mass for the Cathedral of Cadiz, Spain, basing each section on the last words of Christ on the cross. Among Haydn’s main compositions for the choir, this choral work has remained a permanent Easter favourite already for more than 200 years.
James MacMillan is one of the world’s most performed contemporary composers, and Seven Last Words from the Cross has been hailed as his best and most poignant work. It is a 45-minute spiritual journey of a choir and an orchestra to the focal point of Easter, which combines music from different periods. In MacMillan’s hands, Baroque music, church music, Middle Eastern tunes, and 20th-century Modernism find a fast lane right into the heart of the contemporary listener.
