Oulu Sinfonia

The autumn season of Oulu Sinfonia begins with a visit to the Hupisaari Summer Theatre, already a beloved tradition. This event is part of the Oulu Arts’ Night and features three different sorts of concert content, all under the baton of Chief Conductor Rumon Gamba. The featured soloists are Oulu Sinfonia’s own musicians: Mikko Sorri, the concertmaster, as well as Jukka Myllys, normally a trombonist, but tonight heard playing the baritone horn.

Free admission.

at 5 PM Babar and Tubby the Tuba

The evening begins with a concert for the whole family, as the orchestra presents the story of Babar the elephant who dresses like a human being, set to music by Francis Poulenc. In the other piece of this concert, Tubby the Tuba discovers its own beautiful singing voice, story set to music by George Kleinsinger.

Duration about 50 min, no intermission.

at 7 PM Let’s Dance

A trip around the world on the wings of a string of danceable hits. The itinerary runs from Finland to the Greek islands, from there to the swirling metropolitan Vienna, and on to the steppes of Eastern Europe. The journey culminates in the shining lights of Times Square.

Programme:
Leonard Bernstein: 3 Dance Episodes from “On the Town”
Leevi Madetoja: Kapriisi ja valssi Pastoraalisarjasta op. 34
Béla Bartók: Rhapsody No. 1
Ludvig van Beethoven: Symphony No 7 in A Major, Op. 92, movement Finale
Philip Wilby: Concerto For Euphonium, movement Zeibekikos
Zoltán Kodály: Dances Of Galanta

Duration about 65 min, no intermission.

klo 22.00 Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet

The evening concludes with a cult classic by Gavin Bryars, a pioneer of experimental music, from 1971. Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet is a unique marriage urgently opinionated yet soothing music. This gospel music work that overlays loops of a homeless man’s singing over the orchestra’s unhurried tones gives the centre stage to the quiet in the land, the downtrodden and forgotten.

Duration about 40 min, no intermission.
