One doesn’t necessarily have to visit Italy in order to be inspired by its music and culture. Franz Schubert emulated the merry operas of Rossini in his overture, Hugo Wolf pursued a Sicilian dance-ability in his Serenade, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky composed a work about a beautiful woman suffering in the flames of hell after reading Dante’s Divine Comedy.

Luciano Berio was in a league of his own as a modernist in the 20th century. Folk Songs, which uses ancient, modified and self-invented folk tunes as its base, is Berio’s most easily approachable work and it is one the most admired and perplexing works of the last century. Mezzo-soprano Virginie Verrez from the National Opera of Wien will perform in Oulu for the first time.
