Concert program

Benjamin Britten: Passacaglia from Peter Grimes, Op. 33b
Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35

Aaron Copland: Letter from Home (1944, rev.1962)
Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 9 in E-flat Major, Op. 70

Geopolitical upheavals shattered artistic boundaries across the globe: visual art discovered new forms, writers pushed the limits of language, and music sprouted unexpected offshoots. The works in this concert were all composed between 1944 and 1945 – and that, perhaps, is the only thing they have in
common.

Benjamin Britten’s breakthrough opera Peter Grimes, tragic and transformative, reshaped the direction of British opera the moment it was born. Dmitri Shostakovich’s supposedly “too light-hearted” ninth symphony defied political expectations in the ruins of the Second World War. And in Mexico, Aaron Copland – the father of the American style – channelled his homesickness into a powdered-pastel postcard of open fields and rural serenity.

Swedish violin sensation Johan Dalene performs Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto, in which one captivating theme follows another – a work by a composer whose Hollywood adventure scores earned him multiple Oscars.

Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00. Discussion of the forthcoming concert.
