Charles Ives The Unanswered Question
Leonard Bernstein Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

Timeless mysteries and unbounded joy in the American style — the Taiwanese conductor I-Han Fu leads the audience to witness opposites that complement one another. Blue Cathedral, the breakthrough work of subsequent multiple Grammy award winner Jennifer Higdon, is a musical expression of towering sorrow, whereas Charles Ives’s Unanswered Question outlines a cosmic landscape of the unpredictability of music and life itself.

Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story is not only a musical for the ages, but the definitive urban modernization of Romeo and Juliet. His 1960 Symphonic Dances distils the entire musical into a narrative series, with each song representing a new climax. Oulu Sinfonia’s trombonist Wen Hong Low is the featured performer for the American Chris Brubeck’s concerto, its parts replete with the suppleness of jazz with a nostalgic twist.
