Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73
Johannes Brahms’s second symphony was supposed to be overshadowed by sorrow. Rather the opposite happened: the most beloved German symphony basks in a utopia of carefree bliss and the splendor of alpine lakes.
Ruth Gipps’s post-romantic musical language evokes memories of Finnish heritage; a wistful portrayal of lakes, forests, and fields. Cringlemire Gardens brings to life the landscapes of northern England with the power of imaginative music.
Winner of The VII International Paulo Cello Competition, Luka Coetzee, takes on Edward Elgar’s very last orchestral work, the Cello Concerto, that yearns for times gone by.
Head start in Restaurant Preludi at 18:30. Discussion of the forthcoming concert.
