Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 “Pathétique”
The Pathétique Symphony crowned Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s life’s work with a melancholy mystery. Did he sense his own end? Is the finale, fading into silence, in fact a message of farewell? Only nine days after its premiere, Tchaikovsky lost his life under unclear circumstances. What he left behind was a great symphony of great questions. The Pathétique is Tchaikovsky’s most personal orchestral work, into which he himself declared he had poured his entire soul.
Italian composer Nicola Campogrande, one of the most esteemed voices in present-day contemporary music, is known for his melodious, neoclassically inspired style. His latest work Liberi Tutti is a rare kind of concerto in which four string players form a single, four-voiced soloist. The piece receives its Finnish premiere with the internationally acclaimed Meta4 string quartet.
The enduring popularity of the ballet The Three-Cornered Hat cemented Manuel de Falla’s reputation as Spain’s leading composer of the 20th century. This orchestral suite, curated by conductor Josep Vicent, whisks the listener away to sun-drenched Andalusia, where fiery dances accompany the twists and turns of a romantic comedy.
