Concert program

Ludwig van Beethoven: Trio in G major for piano, flute and bassoon, WoO 37

Ernő Dohnányi: Sextet for piano, violin, viola, cello, clarinet and horn in C major, Op. 37

Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Trio in G major, WoO 37, at the young age of 15. This work reflects Beethoven’s classical roots and his early influences, such as Mozart and Haydn. This piece showcases Beethoven’s burgeoning talent and his ability to blend different instrumental timbres. The music is lively, melodic, and filled with youthful exuberance, giving us a glimpse of the genius that would later revolutionise music.

Ernő Dohnányi’s Sextet in C major, Op. 37, composed in 1935, is a remarkable work that combines the forces of piano, clarinet, horn, violin, viola, and cello. Unlike Beethoven’s early trio, Dohnányi’s sextet represents a mature and sophisticated composition that looks ahead of its time. Blending Romantic lyricism with elements of early modernism, the sextet features innovative harmonies and intricate orchestration. Dohnányi’s ability to seamlessly integrate different musical styles and traditions makes this piece a forward-looking masterpiece.

The concert’s title, “Forward and Backward,” reflects the dual journey we embark on through these two contrasting yet complementary works. Beethoven’s Trio takes us backwards to the classical era, where we witness the early stages of the young composer’s development.
In contrast, Dohnányi’s Sextet in C major propels us forward into the 20th century, showcasing a composer who pushes the boundaries of musical expression, blending the old with the new in a harmonious fusion.

Together, these works illustrate how the past informs the present and shapes the future.

Welcome to enjoy the rich tapestry of such musical artistry together with us and Hannu Alasaarela as our special guest pianist!
