This concert is especially dedicated to one of the most active chamber musicians among our colleagues: Arto Alikoski, Oulu Sinfonia’s solo cellist.
His performances have always been distinguished by a professional, passionate and friendly attitude. Arto is now retiring, but he says: “I won’t stop playing cello as long as my heart beats”. We are happy to celebrate this idea and Arto’s career all together.
This concert will start with two pieces for cello solo, the Sarabande from the Suite No. 1 in G major by J. S. Bach and the Elegia for Sebastian Knight composed by Aulis Sallinen: we’ll immerse ourselves into music from baroque to modern times, discovering different timbres and cello playing techniques, creating breathtaking sound landscapes.
Then a violin will join the cello for a meditative piece, the Castillo Interior, composed by Peteris Vasks. The title refers to the book Dwellings of the Interior Castle (Moradas del Castillo Interior) from 1577, the magnum opus of the mystic Theresa of Avila.
The Suite for String Trio in A Major by Jean Sibelius and Edward William Elgar’s String Quartet will follow, enriching the sound palette of this program with melodies full of romantic emotions.
