Verdi: Requiem

The colossal success of Aida elevated Giuseppe Verdi to the status of a globally admired opera composer. Upon hearing of the death of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, he ventured into uncharted territory and composed the great Messa da Requiem. The liturgical form did not constrain his dramatic instinct; on the contrary. The overwhelming pathos of the Requiem strikes straight at the heart – even more piercingly than any of Verdi’s operas. Through its vast choral passages, moving arias and majestic interludes, the work lifts the veil between life and death with heartrending intensity, yet offers profound solace.
