Chamber Concert: Impressionist Reflections

Oulu Sinfonia Chamber Musicians present Impressionist Reflections, a program shaped by color, atmosphere, and the subtle play of light — qualities that resonate across the chosen compositions despite their different origins and eras.

The concert unfolds like a gradual dawn. Benjamin Godard’s Aubade opens the program with an intimate exchange between violin and cello, like a quiet awakening.

Erik Melartin’s String Trio expands this early light into a more spacious, Nordic clarity, its textures transparent yet warm, as if the horizon were widening.

From this luminous foundation grows Marcus Barcham Stevens’s Living Trees, where flute and strings form a living ecosystem of breath, resonance, and organic motion. The work feels like a natural continuation of Melartin’s world: the same sensitivity to color, but now animated by a contemporary pulse, branching outward in unexpected directions.

After the intermission, George Enescu’s Aubade returns us to the morning theme, but with a different energy: rhythmic, folkloric, and subtly iridescent. It mirrors Godard’s opening gesture while refracting it through Enescu’s unmistakable harmonic language, creating a dialogue across time.

The journey culminates in Antonín Dvořák’s “American” Quartet, here in a vibrant arrangement for flute and strings. Its open landscapes, rhythmic vitality, and heartfelt lyricism gather all the preceding reflections into a final, generous outpouring of light.
