Suffering and Redemption

Latvia’s towering figure of contemporary music – and the last representative of so-called sacred minimalism – Pēteris Vasks is known for his deeply expressive, almost hypnotic sound world. Musica Dolorosa stands as his most tragic creation: a cry of anguish lost on the path of sorrow, every bar breathing the despair and revelation of the end of days.

The Violin Concerto became the final work of Alban Berg, one of the great visionaries of modern music. Dedicated ”to the memory of an angel,” it reveals how even the most modernist of languages can lead unerringly to the wellspring of human emotion – a luminous farewell where intellect and feeling meet in perfect harmony.

Richard Wagner’s monumental operas, steeped in Germanic mythology, transformed the very essence of musical drama. His final masterpiece, Parsifal, draws on medieval legend to tell a timeless story of the quest for the Holy Grail and the hope of salvation. The acclaimed orchestral suite arranged by conductor Andrew Gourlay will at last be heard in Oulu, leading audiences through the luminous soundscape of Parsifal’s spiritual journey. Guiding us into the atmosphere of Easter is Jascha von der Goltz, who last year set Madetoja Hall alight with his brilliance.
