Edward Elgar Introduction and Allegro for Strings, Op. 47
Sampo Kasurinen Alttoviulukonsertto (World Premiere)
—
Antonín Dvořák Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95, ”From the New World”
Lilli Maijala, whose roots are in Oulu, will return as a soloist to her home orchestra with a concerto tailor-made for her. The brand-new work, commissioned from Sampo Kasurinen by Oulu Sinfonia and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, depicts the fragile pillars of power and power structures, in the spirit of the Icelandic Ragnar Kjartanson’s artworks.
The Czech national romantic Antonín Dvořák returned from America bringing his greatest and most beautiful work with him. The ninth symphony, imitating the acoustic worlds of endless prairies and swaying fields, honoring the songs of the indigenous peoples and black immigrants, is known by the moniker “From the New World”. Edward Elgar’s dramatic string work Introduction and Allegro is a prime example of the English composer’s timeless, nostalgia-filled melancholy.
